Revising the Classics, Part the First*

My sister Laura and I talked the other day about church music. We agreed that we love the old quiet hymns, but we also appreciate the jauntier stuff that we can sing along with, and yes, even clap to.

This innocent conversation led me, in very short order, to this bit of creativity run amok:

Elvira

Song by

The Oak Ridge Boys

(Baptist-friendly version, adapted by Evelyn J. Willburn)

 My Jesus

My Jesus, my Jesus
My heart’s on fire for my Jesus

Eyes that look from heaven, love that flows like wine

Jesus makes the world’s light shine
I get a happy feelin’, up and down my spine
‘Cause I know that Jesus’ love is mine

So I’m singin’, my Jesus, my Jesus
My heart’s on fire, for my Jesus
Giddy up, oom poppa, omm poppa, mow mow
Giddy up, oom poppa, omm poppa, mow mow, heigh-ho Gabriel, away

Someday I’m gonna meet Him, when this life has slipped away,
And I’m gonna sing this little song for Him, yes I am
Heaven’s gonna jump and holler, ’cause we won’t need no dollars

I’ve searched and found that Jesus is my preacher man.

Now I’m a singin’ my Jesus, my Jesus
My heart’s on fire for my Jesus
Giddy up, oom poppa, omm poppa, mow mow
Giddy up, oom poppa, omm poppa, mow mow, heigh-ho Raphael, away

My Jesus, my Jesus
My heart’s on fire for my Jesus
Giddy up, oom poppa, omm poppa, mow mow
Giddy up, oom poppa, omm poppa, mow mow, heigh-ho Michael, away

My Jesus, my Jesus
My heart’s on fire for my Jesus
Giddy up, oom poppa, omm poppa, mow mow
Giddy up, oom poppa, omm poppa, mow mow, heigh-ho Uriel, away
My Jesus, my Jesus
My heart’s on fire for my Jesus

Of course, one could substitute any biblical names one chooses in the place of “Silver.” I picked the more familiar names of the seven archangels, just because they are so cool. It occurred to me that one could also use “Mary,”  “Joseph,” “Gabriel,” and  “Magi.”

Take it and run with it, and have fun! Just please use my name (and the Oak Ridge Boys!) if you perform or share it.

    1. Why, thank you, sister dear! Do you remember dancing to the original, somewhere in Williamsburg (perhaps) in the early 80s? I was wearing a black floral skirt that I had bought at the Pottery Factory. William was cuttin’ that rug.

  1. I like the archangels. And a well known gospel band in Powhatan is going to give it a try! I am sure they will correctly give credit!
